If you love Pacific Coast Native Iris, we know you will enjoy membership in the Society for Pacific Coast Native Iris, an independent section of the American Iris Society.
Our publication, Pacific Iris (formerly the Almanac), is issued twice yearly. There you'll discover reports on each species and the hybrids [or "Pacificas"] derived from them - advice on how to grow them from seed, when to transplant, where to see them in the wild, and lots of other helpful information.
An annual seed-exchange is part of each year's Fall issue, with lists of available species and open-pollinated hybrids. You'll also find useful publications available for sale, like Victor Cohen's A Guide to the Pacific Coast Iris, published by the British Iris Society, or Dr. Lee Lenz' A Revision of the Pacific Coast Irises, and Hybridization and Speciation in the Pacific Coast Irises.
In bloom season each year, SPCNI organizes an expedition to see these iris in their native habitat and/or hybrids in garden situations. Sometimes the "Trek" is a bus or van trip, accompanied by a native plant expert familiar with the area (if available). Other times, directions are provided to areas where the species grow in the wild, meeting places designated, and travel is by caravan.
